Microsoft adds new component to its Dual-screen layout library

Microsoft has added a new component to its Dual-screen layout library for supporting Navigation Rail on foldable devices, such as the Surface Duo. Navigation Rail is a Material Design component that provides a side navigation bar for app destinations.

On devices with foldable screens, a challenge arises in making sure that UI elements aren’t obscured by the hinge where the device folds, which might occur if the elements aren’t designed for foldable devices and thus are placed in the area the screen folds.

To make sure that the Navigation Rail menu doesn’t conflict with the screen hinge, Microsoft has introduced support for NavigationRailView

Developers can use the setMenuGravity() function to Top, Center, or Bottom, which will reposition the buttons on the menu to avoid being placed under the screen hinge.

NavigationRailView also supports animations and fling gestures. Because the position of the Navigation Rail is changed at runtime using these methods, a translation animation can be added to make the transition look more natural.

Gestures can also be used to change the Navigation Rail position. Swiping up or down on the menu will set the gravity to either Top or Bottom, respectively.

2022: The year of hybrid work

Remote work was once considered a luxury to many, but in 2020, it became a necessity for a large portion of the workforce, as the scary and unknown COVID-19 virus sickened and even took the lives of so many people around the world.  Some workers were able to thrive in a remote setting, while others felt isolated and struggled to keep up a balance between their work and home lives. Last year saw the availability of life-saving vaccines, so companies were able to start having the conversation about what to do next. Should they keep everyone remote? Should they go back to working in the office full time? Or should they do something in between? Enter hybrid work, which offers a mix of the two. A Fall 2021 study conducted by Google revealed that over 75% of survey respondents expect hybrid work to become a standard practice within their organization within the next three years.  Thus, two years after the world abruptly shifted to widespread adoption of remote work, we are dec...
