Data transmission in the computer represents the direction of the flow of the output to the devices communicating. Because of this, it is also named directional mode and data communication.

Data transmission can be divided into three types, or there are three types of data transmission. And in this article, we are going to explore all three types of data transmission in detail.

What is Data Transmission?

Whenever we type data into the computer device using a wired or wireless keyboard. Then each typed key gets transformed into the binary language by the keyboard itself. And using such a code method computers exchange the information and give the desired result.

7 and 8 bits system used, in 7 bits system the 128 different elements used. Whereas in an 8 bit system, 256 different elements come into use. And the similar process executes from the receiver, and that decodes the codes into the characters.

EBCDIC and ASCII are the two most used codes for data communication in the computer. EBCDIC represents the Extended Binary Coded Decimal, and ASCII represents the computer’s American Standard Code for Information Exchange.

Thus, your device would also be using these two codes to decode the transmission.

So, in short, Data transmission is the transfer of the data between two devices using standard code EBCDIC and ASCII.

1. Simplex

Simplex is the data transmission type that only flows in one or a particular direction. Thus using this mode, the sender of the message does not get the output of that data. Also, in this case, the data receiver can only receive the information but can not reply.

This type of data transmission is not popular because using this, we can not execute the two-way transmission. And that can create several conflicts between the sender and receiver.

But, it is used in sales because their company does not need to have two-way conversations. They send the offer, and if the receiver is interested, then they can perform the offer.

Advantage of Simplex Transmission:

  • It can use the total capacity of the data communication channel or platform.
  • Also, there are very few data traffic issues, so communication is done quickly.

Disadvantage of Simplex Transmission:

  • There is no two-way communication hence neither sender nor receiver can send or receive the output.

2. Half Duplex

The half-duplex type of data transmission provides two-way communication but at different times. It means that in real-time, you can not perform the two-way communication using the half-duplex transmission.

It is also called the semi duplex because it allows two-way communication but is not as effective as it should be.

By using this transmission mode, the transmission can utilize the device’s total capacity in every flow. But, it is not adequate; hence, most people denied using this way of transmission. But still, it has several uses, such as we can use it in error detection. Internet browsers and Walkie-Talkie are examples of half-duplex data transmission.

Advantage of Half-Duplex:

  • This way of transmission can use the most significant capacity of the communication channel.
  • It enables a two-way data transmission facility for the users.

Disadvantage of Half-Duplex:

  • It enables two-way communication but does not provide a reply back feature at the same time.
  • There can be a bit of delay as there is two-way communication.

3. Full Duplex

Full Duplex is the famous type of data transmission because it can transfer the data from one device to another in both directions. Also, it provides a data transmission facility to the receiver and sender in real-time. In short, in this transmission type, the sender and receiver can send and receive the data in real-time. Generally, this transmission is used in telephone networks where you can listen and talk to the person via call.

Advantage of Full-Duplex:

  • We can conduct two-way communication simultaneously in real-time.
  • Also, it is the fastest way of data transmission methods used these days.

Disadvantage of Full-Duplex:

  • The capacity of the data transmission channel gets divided into two parts. Because the sender and receiver both are taking place together.
  • Sometimes the receiver and sender of the data can face problems because of improper channel bandwidth.

The data transmission can also divide into two forms based on their bits. So, below are the two types of data transmission based on bits to the computer devices.

4. Serial

It is the type of data transmission where the bits of data are sent serially one by one manner in the transmission channel. Thus it needs a single transmission line where the transmission data bits can transfer. The receiver receives the data during the transmission in a synchronized manner. Hence they might face a problem if they are unable to synchronize the data. It takes several clock cycles to execute the data transfer because its data integrity is maintained. It is suitable for long-distance computer data transfer or if the amount of data is low.

If you have connected computers using serial ports, then you can transfer the data safely and accurately.

Advantage of Serial Data Transmission:

  • It is suitable for long-distance data transmission between the devices.
  • It saves money; hence it’s a cost-effective way of data transmission.

Disadvantage 0f Serial Data Transmission:

  • However, you may have to struggle with slow data transmission because prefixed bits of data are transferred.

5. Parallel

In this way of data transmission, you can send the data in bits parallelly in real-time. In simple words, we can say it is the way of transmission where the data is transferred in n-bits at a time.

It is used for short-distance communication as a large set of data can be sent shortly.

Data transfer between the computer or laptop device between the printer is an example of parallel transmission.

Advantage of Parallel Data Transmission:

  • Somehow it’s an easy way to transmit the data between the devices.
  • It is fast because it uses an n-transmission data channel.

Disadvantage of Parallel Data Transmission:

  • This method is not cost-effective because it requires multiple channels.
