SD Times Open-Source of the Week: Stargate

Stargate is a data API gateway built on top of Apache Cassandra. The API gateway was created as a way to let developers work in frameworks and structures familiar to them without having to know all the particulars of the underlying database.  Stargate v2 is now generally available with more flexible deployments and makes it easier to create new APIs.  In the new version, the REST, GraphQL, and Document APIs are factored out as independent services to make it easier to enhance a particular API service or add a new API service.  It also includes a new bridge gRPC API to the coordinator node to make it easier to create additional API services. The project is also moving away from the OSGi as the containerization standard and making each service deployable as its own Kubernetes pod.  Version 1 users only have to update their configuration to run the v2 version of the coordinator if they want to migrate. Users of Stargate HTTP APIs will need to run instances of each API service they nee

Amazon announces Neptune Serverless

The team at Amazon today announced Neptune Serverless to help organizations scale automatically as queries and workloads change, working to adjust capacity in increments to provide the correct amount of database resources that an application needs. According to Amazon, this service can be used for development, test, and production workloads as well as to improve database costs compared to provisioning for optimal capacity. Neptune Serverless also allows users to accelerate the deployment of graphs for modern applications.  Amazon stated that users can start with a small graph, and as the workload grows, Neptune Serverless will work to scale the graph databases in order to provide the necessary performance. The service is intended to rid users of the need to manage database capacity and allow them to run graph applications without the added risk of higher costs from over-provisioning or lack of capacity from under-provisioning.  Additionally, Neptune Serverless allows users to cont

Google announces AppSheet databases for citizen development

Google announced the public preview of AppSheet databases, a built-in database for citizen developers to easily and securely manage their data using AppSheet.  This extends the functionality of Google’s AppSheet by allowing users to create and manage databases within the AppSheet platform, enabling them to keep track of their data and making it possible to share their data in a variety of ways. Users can get started by creating a blank database from the My Apps page. The database then provides a complete toolset for relational data design and management directly in AppSheet. Lastly, once a database is created, an app can be generated from that database.  AppSheet databases include performance improvements, a simple-to-use AppSheet database editor, and seamless integration with the AppSheet app editor.  During public preview, access to AppSheet will be enabled by default but it will not affect existing apps.  The post Google announces AppSheet databases for citizen development app

Several new features added to Jetpack Compose in latest stable release

The Android development team has announced a number of new updates to help developers maximize their productivity when developing for Android devices. The announcements come from the annual Android Developer Summit , which is happening today.    Much of the news revolves around Jetpack Compose , which is a UI toolkit that the team released over a year ago.   At the Summit, the team is releasing the latest stable version of Compose, the October ‘22 release. One new addition in this release is the inclusion of a Bill of Materials (BOM), which will make it easier for developers to track releases of Compose. According to the team, it will allow developers to simply define a BOM rather than needing to define each version of Compose separately in the Gradle dependencies block.  This release also reworks how Modifiers work behind the scenes. Developers won’t be able to notice the change across their APIs, however this change will lay the foundation for improving Modifier performance.
